Grandfather Ranger District

The Grandfather Ranger District is the furthest east of the three ranger districts comprising Pisgah National Forest, consisting of national forest lands east and south of the Blue Ridge Parkway in McDowell, Burke, Caldwell, Avery, and Watauga Counties.  The district covers more than 192,000 acres of protected land.

Recreational Areas

Curtis Creek - Curtis Creek was the first tract of national forest land in the eastern US purchased under the Weeks Act in 1911.  The remote area near Old Fort has a campground and several miles of hiking trails.

Linville Gorge Wilderness - Linville Gorge is the deepest gorge in the eastern US.

Old Fort - National Forest lands surrounding the town of Old Fort, including Catawba Falls.

Wilson Creek - Wilson Creek, a designated Wild and Scenic River, contains much of the land on the flank of Grandfather Mountain with many miles of trails and cascading waterfalls.
