With Hurricane Irene, there was no hiking for me on Saturday. The NC State Parks are still closed, so this morning, Sandy and I hiked Section 1 of the Falls Lake Trail at Falls Lake. It runs from the Falls Dam on Falls of Neuse Road to the bridge over Falls Lake on Raven Ridge Road; total distance about 3.5 miles each way. There were two trees that had fallen over the trail - one was easy to step right over, the other required a little more climbing. However, we saw a volunteer with the Friends of the MST who was out assessing the trail and had a saw to clear the trail, so this should be cleared up shortly. Despite the rain from Irene, the lake is still quite low. At the end of Section 1 on Raven Ridge Road, we could see people fishing who had walked out on the exposed lake bed. We also saw the most perfect and symmetrical spiderweb I have ever seen. Uploaded the pictures to the Falls Lake webpage. |
